Winter skirts are easy to find but not so easy to keep looking flattering. If you want that holy grail of versatile and unfussy cold weather outfits, you’ll need to take the time to find the right skirt. There are several things to consider when choosing a winter skirt.
1. FIT
It’s important that your skirt fits well. A roomy skirt can have a tendency to look shapeless and unflattering, while one that is too tight can make you look frumpy and out of proportion. Also consider the length of the skirt with your shoes on: if your shoes are lower than an inch off the ground, your skirt should be too. You will want to wear boots with a good heel when wearing skirts in winter for this reason.
2. COLOR
You want to find a winter skirt that is warm and colorful. Dark blue or black is the most flattering color for cold weather, but if you’re pressed for time or money, choosing an accent color will do the trick. Try to avoid white or neutral colored skirts in winter because they tend to be unflattering. Pink, red, and green are great choices because they look good with anything and make you feel warm.
3. FABRIC
You need a skirt that is warm and will not show the cold. Wool, cashmere, and mohair are all great choices because they keep the wind out and look great at the same time. Thin cotton skirts can be worn in fall but should be avoided in winter.
4. DESIGN
The design of the skirt should be fitted and have a little bit of flare at the bottom. Too much flare will make your legs look disproportionate to the rest of your body. A tight skirt that skimps over your behind is not going to flatter you or keep you warm in winter.
5. PRICE
Always remember that expensive does not mean better quality, even in clothing. A well-fitted skirt can be found almost anywhere. It is always good to check out the price at a couple of different places before you purchase something, but it’s unlikely that you will find a great deal at yard sales or second hand stores.
